We have a 6kw Proven wind Turbine on a 15
metre mast on our farm, we hope this will produce around
8000 kWh per year. Our entrance gate to the farm is also
powered by Solar Panel.
Is wind electricity suitable for my home? To tell if a
small scale domestic wind turbine is right for you, there
are a few key questions to consider:
Wind turbines work with thin air, so they need to be large
in relation to the power they produce. To power a modern
home on a good site, the blades would need to span about
5 metres from tip to tip. This is known as the rotor diameter.
With careful conservation of energy a smaller machine
may suffice. A rotor diameter of 2 metres might yield
about 500 kWh of electricity per year, compared with an
average annual household consumption of roughly 4,500
kWh.
Are there any large obstacles like buildings, trees or
hills near your home? Small domestic wind turbines work
best in exposed locations, without turbulence caused by
these types of obstacles.
Is your home in a windy area? To be effective you need
an average wind speed of no less than 5m/s. Is your home
located away from the National Grid? Small domestic wind
systems are particularly suitable for use in remote locations.
Do you need planning permission? Small domestic wind systems
normally do require permission from your local authority,
so check before you install a system.
What size of wind turbine do I need? 6kw is the largest
for domestic use, with single phase electricity, if you
have 3 phase electricity supply you can go larger. Please
phone if you require any advise, or you are welcome to
come and have a look.
